Wounaan Baskets
The Wounaan Indian women who live in the Darien Rainforest of Panama have been weaving baskets for sale for more than two decades.
The baskets are made of Chunga palm leaves. The leaves are split into threads, sun dried to a white color and dyed with other plants, or buried in mud to turn them black. Then the women will start weaving from the bottom of the basket by manipulating another type of palm as a foundation coil, and use sewing needles to wrap the coil with threads. We have organized the Wounaan baskets by the following categories: Black and White Geometrics, Pictorials (butterflies, parrots and rainforest scenes), Colorful Geometrics, Small Baskets, Primitives, and plates and pendants.
